Visting scholar: Marina Popescu

We are pleased to welcome Professor Marina Popescu (Central European University and Median Research Centre, Bucharest) as visiting scholar in February.

Marina Popescu is a political scientist who tries to understand the effects of information on people's opinions, preferences and behaviour, and to find ways in which social science knowledge can gain more applied relevance. She holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Essex, United Kingdom (2008), where she also completed a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship n 2009-2012. Currently she is Assistant Professor in Political Communication at the Central European University in Budapest, and she previously taught also at Eötvös Loránd University Budapest, and at the School of Public Policy, University College London. She is a co-author of the book Embodying Democracy. Electoral System Design in Post-Communist Europe. Currently she is the principal investigator of the Less Hate More Speech. An experimental and comparative study in media and political elites ability to nurture civil, tolerant, pro-democratic citizens project funded primarily through the EEA-Norway Grants Financial Mechanism 2009-2014, and of the CNCS - NRC research project Rethinking Representation 2013-2016: Campaign Personalization and Legislative Behaviour. Marina Popescu is also the president of Median Research Centre in Bucharest, Romania – a not-for-profit non-partisan think tank that developed the information and discussion portal openpolitics.ro, which includes the parliamentary monitoring application Parlament Transparent and the vote advice application TestVot.
