The EUCE's mandate is to promote a high-quality knowledge and understanding of Europe and to stimulate the study of the European Union in Montreal, Quebec and Canada. To achieve these goals, the EUCE focuses on four types of activities: research; teaching; specialised training; and outreach/networking activities.

Along with four similar centres established elsewhere in Canada, the EUCE is supported by the European Commission until 2016.
